How long does AMS 700 last?

The AMS 700 implant is durable and can last patients for many years as it is made of silicone and coated with parylene to mitigate cylinder fatigue and wear. According to a clinical review of over 50,000 implants, the 7-year mechanical failure-free survival rate for the AMS 700 was 94.1%.

How long does the AMS 700 surgery take?

The AMS 700 is an inflatable penile implant device. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction when all other methods have failed. When other methods have failed, or have stopped working, it can be an excellent choice as a long-term solution for erectile dysfunction.

The surgery to place the AMS 700 penile implant is performed under general anaesthetic by a specialist Urologist. The surgery will take around two hours and is performed under general anaesthetic. Before that though, patients are admitted to the hospital around two hours for pre-operative checks. After the surgery patients are transferred to recovery and from there back to their room. In most cases the surgery can be carried out as a day case. This means that you will be able to go home on the same day as the procedure.

In some cases, such as patients with certain medical conditions, or those who do not have anyone to look after them for the first 24 hours after surgery, an overnight stay in hospital will be required. Discharge in these cases is on the following morning.

The AMS penile implant device cannot be used from day one. This is because the scrotum is swollen and sore at first. This is perfectly normal and settles down over the following few weeks. As time goes by and the swelling decreases the Urologist will show you how to get the implant working. This process is called “Cycling” of the implant. In essence this is teaching you how to inflate and deflate the device. It takes practice to do this so don’t be surprised if it takes you a while to get used to doing it. The Urologist will also teach your partner how to inflate and deflate the device too if you wish.

After some practice you will be able to inflate and deflate the AMS 700 penile implant device at will. In some cases, it can take several weeks before you are able to do this, so you need to be patient and take your time.

How safe is the AMS 700 penile implant?

The AMS 700 penile implant has an excellent safety record, and most patients have a successful placement of the implant with no post-operative complications. It is important to follow the post-operative advice from your Urologist to ensure that any risks are minimised as much as possible. By following the post-operative advice to the letter, you will give yourself the best possible chance of a positive outcome to the procedure.
