Vasectomy

What is a Vasectomy?

A vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure, sometimes known as “the snip”. Essentially, it blocks the sperm from reaching the semen when you ejaculate. Don’t worry, you will still be able to ejaculate if you could before, although there will be no sperm in the semen.

A vasectomy continues to be a very popular and effective solution for birth control.

What happens in a vasectomy?

A male vasectomy at Moorgate Andrology is performed by a fully qualified Urologist. It is performed on an out-patient basis which means you can leave the clinic or hospital shortly after the procedure.

Most male Vasectomy procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic. It may be possible to carry the procedure out under sedation if you wish, although this is likely to be a little more expensive. Much depends on your personal preference and how nervous you are about getting it done. You can discuss the type of anaesthesia in your case with the Urologist at your consultation.

In a local anaesthesia procedure, the local anaesthetic is injected into the scrotum to numb the area where the surgeon will operate. This should minimise any discomfort during the procedure. You will still feel some tugging and pulling in the area during the procedure, but not any pain. If you feel any undue discomfort you will be given more local anaesthetic.

In a conventional male vasectomy, after the injection of the local anaesthetic, a small cut is made in the scrotum from which the Surgeon will access the vas deferens. He will then cut the vas deferens and remove a small piece of it. The two ends are then tied and secured with a stitch. This procedure is repeated for the other vas deferens through the same incision. Sometimes the Surgeon may need to make a second incision to reach this other vas deferens.

How will I feel after a vasectomy?

It is normal to feel a little sore after the procedure. Depending on the type of work that you do, you may want to consider a short respite from work. If you have a sedentary job you may able to return to work as soon as the following day.

Some men experience more discomfort than others after a vasectomy. You will require follow up appointments with the Urologist to ensure that everything is settling down as it should.

Sexual activity can usually be resumed one week after the procedure, assuming that the discomfort has subsided and you do not have any post-operative infection.

Following your procedure you will need to have some tests to ensure that your ejaculation is free of sperm. This freedom of sperm does not happen overnight. Most Urologists prefer to wait around three months before the test is performed. It is very important to ensure that you continue with some form of birth control until the Urologist has confirmed that the surgery has been successful.
