You should arrange some time off work after vaginoplasty, depending on the type of work that you do. In most cases you will be able to return to work after around one week. If you job is quite strenuous then you may need a more time off.
In the first week you may experience some pain and discomfort although you will be given pain relief on discharge from hospital and a course of antibiotics. Most patients are able to manage any discomfort with the pain relief medication.
You should rest in the first week after the procedure. Drink plenty of water in the first days after the procedure. Avoid using tampons for 8 weeks or until the Gynaecologist advises you to do so. Similarly, you should avoid sexual intercourse for at least 6 weeks.
If you smoke, it would be helpful to avoid smoking for six weeks.
During the first 48 hours after surgery it is normal for the patient to notice some discomfort. It is necessary to rest during this period. You should avoid using tampons and sexual intercourse for eight weeks after surgery. You will need one to two weeks of time off following vaginoplasty surgery depending on the type of work that you do.
You may find that sitting will be uncomfortable in the first week, this is normal at this stage of the recovery process.
The Gyanaecologist will advise you to take showers in the first few weeks after surgery and avoid soaking in the bath. This is because bathing can increase the risk of infection.
Post operatively you will have some swelling of the labia and this will take several weeks to settle. In the first week or two you can apply ice to the perineum to help with swelling and ease discomfort.
